Peter W. F. Wilson, MD, joined the Emory University faculty in the summer of 2006. He is Professor of Medicine in the Cardiology Division, Professor of Public Health at the Rollins School of Public Health, and Director of Epidemiology and Genomic Medicine at the Atlanta VA Medical Center. He graduated with a B.S. from Yale University in 1970 and a doctor of medicine degree from the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio in 1974. His medical training took place at Duke University and he is board certified in internal medicine and endocrinology. From 1978 to 1999 he was affiliated with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and from 1983 to 2003 was Director of Laboratories at the Framingham Heart Study. He was a Professor of Medicine at the Boston University School of Medicine from 1999-2003 and Professor of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina from 2003 to 2006.
Dr. Wilson has a long-term interest in metabolic and cardiovascular population research. His research has focused on determinants of coronary artery disease, including projects on physical activity, obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension. dyslipidemia, vascular calcification, hormonal factors, inflammatory markers, and genetics. He has also undertaken research into the metabolic factors as antecedents of diabetes mellitus with consideration of traditional factors and insulin resistance. Dr. Wilson is fellow of the Epidemiology Council of the American Heart Association and has served as the Program Committee Chair of the Spring American Heart Association Epidemiology Council Meeting in 2007-2008 and Vice Chair of the Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism Council in 2010-2012. He is a member of the NHLBI Cholesterol Adult Treatment Panel IV and the NHLBI Heart Disease Risk Assessment Working Group. He is an author or coauthor of more than 500 scientific articles and four books.
