Diabetes Educator Certificate Course

Target Audience

This three day seminar is open to professionals of the health care team including nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, social workers and others with present or planned involvement in the management and education of individuals with diabetes. Multi-discipline health care teams interested in organizing or improving a diabetes program are especially encouraged to attend. Professionals preparing to take the Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) examination will find the course facilitates their study.

Time is allocated for observations in the clinical setting with members of the health care team of your choice.

Enrollment will be limited to 15 participants per session.

Course Requirements

  • Degree or diploma in a health profession
  • This course is designed for clinicians who care for persons with diabetes in their general practice but who have not recevied specialized entry-level training in diabetes disease management
  • This course is also open to students preparing to take their licensure examination

Course Objectives

By the end of the 3-day course, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of diabetes pathophysiology, epidemiology and clinical guidelines consistent with a diabetes educator practice level
  • Describe the complications of diabetes and identify appropriate pharmacological treatment options
  • Provide diabetes support and care in a culturally-competent manner across the lifespan
  • Apply principles of teaching, learning and behavior change to facilitate self-management skills on individuals with diabetes
  • Recognize the importance of an interdisciplinary diabetes care team
  • Identify principles of program management to systematically improve the delivery of diabetes education in their practice setting
  • Develop a process involving assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the patient's diabetes education intervention
  • Describe and apply the AADE7 self-care behavior framework as a guide to the delivery of diabetes education

Credits

Grady Health System Department of Quality Management and Education is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the GA Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. This activity has been approved for 21 contact hours offering.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics awards 17 continuing education units.
