Biography
Dr. Umpierrez is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Associate Director of the General Clinical Research Center at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. He is also Director of the Diabetes Clinic and the Diabetes and Endocrinology Section of Grady Health Systems in Atlanta. He received his medical degree from University of Guayaquil, Ecuador in 1979, and completed his internal medicine residency and endocrinology fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Umpierrez's academic and clinical appointments include several positions in the fields of endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism.
Dr. Umpierrez is the recipient of numerous teaching awards, including 4 of the annual Best Clinical Science Professor Award from Emory University, 3 of the Golden Apple Award for Best Clinical Teacher from the Department of Medicine at Emory University, the J. Willis Hurst Outstanding Bedside Teacher Award from the Georgia Chapter of American College of Physicians (ACP), and the Wyman P. Sloan, Jr Attending Physician of the Year Award from Atlanta Medical Center. He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Society, a fellow of the ACP and American Association of Clinical Endocrinology (AACE), a board member of the Atlanta Chapter of American Diabetes Association (ADA) and Georgia AACE, and is the Chairman of the Diabetes Task Force of the Hormone Foundation a subcommittee of The Endocrine Society. He has 70 scientific publications and book chapters, and has more than 70 research abstracts presented at national and international scientific meetings.
Dr. Umpierrez's current research interest include mechanisms for ß-cell dysfunction in minority populations with ketosis-prone type 2 diabetes, the effects of free fatty acids on insulin secretion and hypertension in obese patients, and the inpatient management of insulin in critical and non-critical patients. His research programs at Grady Hospital and Emory University are funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), American Diabetes Association (ADA), and American Heart Association (AHA). Dr. Umpierrez also receives funding for a bilingual diabetes education program for Latinos in Georgia, and serves as the principal investigator for several multicenter research studies in the area of diabetes and metabolic disorders.
