General Information

This three day seminar is open to all professionals of the health care team including physicians, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, social workers and others with present or planned involvement in the management and education of individuals with diabetes mellitus. Multi-discipline health care teams interested in organizing or improving a diabetes program are especially encouraged to attend. Professionals preparing to take the Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) examination will find the course facilitates their study.

Time is allocated for observations in the clinical setting with members of the health are team of your choice.

Enrollment will be limited to 14 participants per session.

Objectives

Experiences are planned in the three domains of learning: cognitive, affective and psychomotor. After completing the course the participant should:

  • List the management goals and strategies for each type of diabetes.
  • Differentiate the classification and pathogenesis of the types of diabetes.
  • Describe the acute and chronic complications, management and prevention.
  • Identify nutritional goals and strategies.
  • Identify teaching/learning methods that will enhance patient education.
  • Explain the rationale for utilizing the multidisciplinary team approach.
  • Name promising future prevention and treatment approaches.
Credits

Grady Health System Department of Quality Management and Education is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the GA Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. This activity has been approved for 21 contact hours offering. The American Dietetic Association awards 17.5 continuing education units.

The Emory University School of Medicine designates this continuing medical education activity for 17.5 credit hours in Category 1 of the physician's Recognition Award of the American Medical Association.

Tuition

$325 for non-physician health care professionals
$375 for physicians

All fees must accompany a completed application. A $100 non-refundable application fee is included.
