The Infectious Disease Consult teams (attending, fellow, resident[s]) from each hospital (VA, Grady, CLH and Emory) meet toward the end of each month (final friday, prior to switch dates) for a housestaff lunch conference ( 11:45 to 1:15 PM), presentations begin promptly at noon. One resident from each service has an opportunity to prepare and present an interesting case for discussion.
Each resident has 15 minutes total (includes presentation and discussion). The following format is recommended and either overheads/powerpoint and/or a handout are acceptable. Cases should be selected which either are interesting cases, diagnostic dilemmas which would be a springboard for discussion of DDX/appropriate work-up, or to bring up a specific question regarding an infectious disease related topic or controversy (What do you do with the BAL from an ICU patient that grows HSV?). The resident should check with the attending and fellow to make sure the case is appropriate for presentation at the conference.
3-5 min- case presentation (x-rays, films are great)
3-5 min- open discussion regarding differential diagnosis, appropriate work-up
5 min- Presenting resident gives a focused review on topic (limit handouts to one page with references)
0-3 min- questions/answers/attending comments
