General Medicine's Jason S. Schneider, MD, joined 150 physicians at the White House in October. At the invitation of President Barak Obama, the physicians came to speak about health care reform. Schneider is a member of Doctors for America, a grassroots coalition that advocates for health care reform.
Schneider officially represented Georgia at the Rose Garden event, which included at least one physician from each of the 50 states. "It was an amazing opportunity," he said. "I was excited to represent Georgia with a goal of getting physicians engaged in health care reform and serving as stronger advocates for their patients. Especially with my work at Grady, where we live and breathe that need every day."
Schneider particularly enjoyed meeting with like-minded physicians from across the country, and he was impressed by the sea of white doctors' coats in the Rose Garden. "That was quite a sight," he said. He didn't actually meet the president on his first trip to the White House, although a select group of doctors was invited into the Oval Office.
Emory University does not take a position on political issues such as health care reform. But Schneider's efforts at Grady have led to his personal commitment. "This was a unique opportunity, and I was thrilled to represent Grady while I was there," he said. "I believe that Grady, as well as Emory, can benefit from reform."
